When Eggs Get Risky: What You Need to know about the Salmonella “Sunshine Yolks” Outbreak 2025

EGG 1

What is happening

On August 27, 2025, Country Eggs, LLC of Lucerne Valley, California recalled their large brown, cage-free eggs called “Sunshine Yolks” or “Omega-3 Golden Yolks.” These eggs are sold under multiple names; Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho, Nijiya Markets, and Country Eggs, and were distributed throughout California and Nevada.

Why the Recall?

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) opened an investigation after many Salmonella infections were found to be in relation to these eggs.

  • Confirmed cases: 95 people across 14 states in the U.S. have been identified as infected as of August 27, 2025.
  • Hospitalizations: 18 people have been hospitalized. There were no known deaths.
  • When people became ill: Talli 184 in 2025 was between January 7 and July 26.

How do we know that eggs are implicated?

The CDC spoke directly with 36 patients with Salmonella Enteritidis infection. Out of 36 patients who were ill, 33 (92%) stated that they had eaten eggs in the week before they became ill. That is a much higher proportion than the population level (around 78%) where eggs are an expected source of Salmonella.

  • Dispose of or return the eggs.
  • Clean and sanitize all surfaces and equipment that came into contact with the eggs.

Why It Matters

Eggs are a common source of Salmonella, especially Salmonella Enteritidis. This year, it is estimated that there have been 142,000 infections in the U.S. resulting from contaminated eggs, of which around 30 are fatal on an annual basis .

That’s why this recall matters—even with 95 confirmed illnesses, the reality is probably much higher. Many people don’t report their illness or maybe they don’t even pay attention to a mild case. There is generally going to be a lead time of around 3-4 weeks before public health officials connect a new case to this outbreak.
